Ambient Water Quality Testing

Ambient Water Quality Testing

In toxicity testing for both point source as well as non-point source contaminants that enter ambient waters, bioluminescent plankton have proven to be a sensitive bio-indicator of aquatic toxicity. Rapid test methods and routine monitoring provides a crucial component of a sound scientific basis for decisions, project costs, and next level of testing.

Toxicity tests with bioluminescent plankton have improved response times, sensitivity, and reliability over other types of live species tests; and provide a comprehensive indication of organic, inorganic and heavy metals (and all combination of these), which would take several instruments and lab tests.

Bioluminescent plankton are easy to set up and testing requires minimal laboratory space or equipment. Test results can be achieved in 24 hours or less. Biological Index Number (BIN) is the quantified result, indicating both the presence and severity of biologically harmful substances in a tested sample when compared to CONTROL. Minimal training is needed to perform toxicity testing and interpret the results (BIN).

By performing Rapid Toxicity Assessments (RTAs) using biosensors in water quality testing, large areas can be screened in a relatively short period of time, and for a fraction of the cost required for typical lab tests, focusing resources on areas of need.
