At the meeting, scientists and technology transfer specialists from around the country were honored for advancing their technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace. Assure Controls, Inc. received the National Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer. The award ceremony was held the evening of May 8, 2008, at the Hilton Portland in the Pavilion Ballroom with over four hundred people in attendance. Mr. Bryan Bjorndal, Founder and CEO of Assure Controls, and Dr. David Lapota, inventor, received the award, which included personal letters of appreciation from the US Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Donald C. The "QwikLite" technology was exclusively licensed by Assure Controls from the Space anq Naval Warfare Systems Center, San Diego. This patented technology uses sensitive marine plankton as a biological indicator of toxicity in water and sediment samples. The QwikLite 200 Biosensor System was developed by Assure Controls, and is used to detect environmentally harmful levels of contaminants in environmental risk assessments, effluent discharge compliance requirements, and in routine water monitoring or baseline studies of source waters. Installations of the fIrst commercial QwikLite systems began in 2007 and include EP A projects, river studies, sediment analysis, and water quality monitoring in Chile and China. The QwikLite 200 Biosensor System consists of a laboratory instrument and single use disposable test kits containing packaged bioluminescent marine plankton. The semi-automated testing process uses a touchscreen color display and sensitive optics to measure the reactions of the sensitive plankton when exposed to water samples of uncertain toxicity. This combination greatly improves the quality, reliability and timeliness of critical water safety analysis at a fraction of conventional laboratory methods.
